Teaching kids about fire safety
My 3 year old and I talk about fire safety a lot. It all started with me setting off the alarm while cooking and seems to have ended with pouring water on daddy’s grill mid-steak-cooking. Fire safety is important, kids are never too young to talk about it, and a fire extinguisher is not hard to have available! Micah loves pretending to be a fireman or a police and rescue people, so it’s not surprise that he easily talks about fire safety! The first time I set off a fire alarm while cooking, he was a bit freaked out, but it was a great opportunity to start the discussion about what to do when he hears a fire alarm. He was scared of them for a bit, but many discussions about how the sound is just a helper for us and that his only job is to find mommy or daddy when he hears one, he’s totally comfortable now. He even talks about it during his pretend play! “When you hear the alarm or there is fire, just find mommy”. He knows fire is bad, so much so that he actually extinguished our charcoal grill (from a safe distance with his watering can) while I had my back turned one day! That plus our recent vacation were also great opportunities to talk about when fire is ok (controlled) and when it’s not.

Oh I need to pick that up! We have a large fire extinguisher, but being 5 years old, we probably need to replace. I love the size of these cans! Would be so great to have them around the house just in case. I know our little one learned the stop drop and roll at school this year. So important.
