Tips for Making the Best Gingerbread House

This holiday season we decided we would attempt our first Gingerbread house with our two-year-old. How exciting! I was in desperate need of tips and tricks to get the perfect gingerbread house. Our friends over at Kiddie Academy had some great tips for us on how to construct gingerbread houses. After checking out the tips they had for me, I also wanted to learn more about Kiddie Academy.

Kiddie Academy is a leader in education based childcare programs that focus on developmentally appropriate activities and experiences. Kiddie Academy’s “Life Essentials” curriculum focuses on social and emotional character education, as well as physical and cognitive outcomes that are aligned with state preschool learning and standards. They have locations all over the country. Take a look here to find out where the nearest Kiddie Academy is located near you.

Now, back to those gingerbread house lessons!

The first tip is practicing patience. This is key when icing is the only adhesive to hold the house together.

Secondly, it’s important to talk with your children about perseverance. Do not give up if a wall falls down or a piece of the roof slides down off of the house. If at first you do not succeed – try, try again.

Make sure your children know it’s all for fun and they should be as creative as they want. Allow children to decorate the house as they see fit – creativity wins here!

This helps with children’s imagination and can inspire them to create something awesome.

Last but not least, the best tip of them all –have fun eating them. The art of gingerbread making is all about eating the gingerbread house. Allow kids to snack on treats along the way.

One tip for parents and caregivers: don’t forget to snap a picture of your child’s gingerbread houses. You all will enjoy looking back on them in the years to come. Check back at Grinning Cheek to Cheek closer to the holiday to see our picture of our gingerbread house.

Check out this recipe for gingerbread houses, complete with wall measurements. Enjoy!
