My Toddler has a Temper!
A short temper that is. Little things quickly make him so angry! And then he either cries or gets angry. When he’s angry he either hits or throws things. And I don’t know what to do about it! I know it’s just a phase of the age: he doesn’t know how to handle his emotions appropriately and I have to teach him both through my actions and through my reactions to his actions. So I wasn’t very concerned until he started hitting his sister!
Stop Hitting Your Sister!
In the past month, my toddler has started hitting his little sister. Not hard, but enough to scare her into crying. Or he’ll yell “no” at her and make her cry that way too. Sometimes he does it because she got in his way or took his things or grabbed at his food. Sometimes he’ll hit or yell because he seems to think it’s funny and he’s bored (like sitting in their car seats, I had to split them to opposite sides of the car and he still yells across at her sometimes).
The time that the hitting concerns me most is when he’s angry. He’ll hit whoever is closest, whether that’s me, another person, or baby E. And he knows he’s doing it, because sometimes he’ll say “I’m gonna hit baby!” His hits don’t hurt, but I don’t like the idea of him taking a swing at people just because he’s angry.
It’s pretty much impossible to talk the kid down when he’s angry. He goes to his room, where he cries and sometimes gets more mad because he’s been punished. Then he doesn’t want to talk about it or say sorry, he just wants to get back to living, though he will often stop doing whatever got him in trouble to start with, at least for the time being.
Other moms and dads, I know I can’t be alone in my toddler hitting, I’m sure it’s a phase that most toddlers go through, any tips on what to do to help him stop hitting and find better ways to deal with anger?
My son hits me when he gets in trouble, even if it’s his dad telling him not to do something! I could use some advice on the matter myself. I’m at a loss.
My son is 4 years old and daughter is 13 months. And sometimes she can be the mean one!
But other than that, they do try play without hitting each other for the most part. My son can get a little aggressive sometimes…. How is your son doing now?
Hitting has never really been a problem with my kids (knock on wood!) We have a rule “never touch another person without their permission” My kids know that rule and it helps in many situations.
My almost 3 year old is a hitter too. I am hoping that being in preschool will help, since it won’t be mom telling him no. Fingers crossed!
I only have the one kid, but I’m already dreading this issue when we start having multiples. I wish I had a solution for you, perhaps an alternate consequence?
I have a 4 year old and 2 year old, they do get angry and try to tackle them. I think it is a jealousy thing when they are wanting the same toy. They definitely have a hard time expressing their emotions at this age.
I just always used time out and wouldn’t let them out until they said they were sorry. They found it was better to say it then stay in there. It can be difficult
