Before I had kids, I said I wouldn’t use pacifiers. About 48 hours after I had Micah, he had a pacifier in his mouth. My colicky, recently circumcised little man’s favorite thing to do was suck. So, if he wasn’t breastfeeding or sucking on a finger, he was crying. He wouldn’t even sleep more than 30 minutes without having something to suck on. So, pacifiers kept me sane. He still uses a pacifier at night and nap time, and wails with no end in sight if we try to put him down without it. One of these days we will break the habit, but that might have to wait until Emersyn doesn’t use one either (she only takes pacifiers sometimes, not nearly as addicted as Micah was!).
In the meantime, we’ve hidden all Micah’s “big” pacifiers and only let him use the baby-sized ones, so they are WAY less “suckable”, fall out of his mouth when he falls asleep, and he doesn’t get nearly as mad when we take them away in the morning. And, we’ve given him the 18+ month Difrax pacifier!
18+ Month Difrax Pacifier – Ortho
This pacifier is intended to help break the habit. How? By being solid. It’s not hollow in the middle, which makes it much less “suckable” and much les soothing, Micah basically chews on it instead of even trying to suck on it. He doesn’t like it, but will take it if it’s the only pacifier available, and I love that it’s helping him break his pacifier habit.
0-6 Month Difrax Pacifier – Classic
The Difrax classic pacifier has more of a round tip, compared to the ortho style which is just rounded on the top. The rounded tip is more similar to a nipple, so it’s more friendly for breastfeeding. Emersyn has a great latch, so I wasn’t worried about the pacifier messing with her learning. Right now, she takes the soothies (from the hospital) better than anything else, but she will suck on the classic Difrax pacifier if it’s all I can find. As she gets older, I’ll introduce the Difrax pacifier more often because it stays in her mouth WAY better.
The Difrax pacifiers are also super cute! The patterns are calm, happy and cute. The butterfly design looks nice, and allows better airflow to prevent skin irritation, while keeping the nose wide open. Of all the designs, patterns and colors of pacifiers we’ve had through our house, these are definitely the cutest and most nose-friendly. At $6, they are more expensive than some pacifiers, but definitely not the most expensive out there.

Wow! I really didn’t realize there was so many choices when it came to pacifiers. I really like that they have them in Ortho. I think it’s great that they have come so far.
So funny how pacifiers work for some babies and not for others. I have 3 kids and none of them have wanted anything to do with a pacifier.
I never used them with my daughter but Im def not against them if that wouldve been what she needed. Im glad I never had to break her of that habit but I do wonder if one couldve made certain times easier. I dont think she wouldve taken one though. but i really like that paci thats made to break them of the habit! really nice idea

I hadn’t heard of the difrax so that’s good to know. Some of my kids took the paci and others never did. Can’t wait to see what this new little baby will be like!
Coincidentally or not, my oldest child who had her paci the longest is my calmest child!
Times have changed and so do we when it comes to our children and knowing what they need. I like that this will actually help him wean off the pacifier, that is great
Awesome choice for different kind of pacifiers, I remember my sister when she was a little, she had such an obsession with her pacifiers, she would sneak them when my dad would checkout at the store on the belt and the cashier would ring them up with the rest of the stuff, my dad always got home and found pacifiers in the grocery bags and never knew he was buying them, since she was so sneaky. It was pretty funny how she always did that. It took her a while to stop using them, as she was old enough to not have one.
