Interesting Business Ideas for Stay-at-Home Parents

Starting a business as a stay-at-home parent is a great way to make some extra money for your family, contribute to your savings, and do something for yourself outside of parenting. The thought of running a business alongside parenting may sound overwhelming, but there are plenty of business ideas out there that you can start small with but grow into a great business. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are five simple business ideas for stay-at-home parents that you could start today.

Make money from your hobby

Do you love pottery, baking, or DIY? Do you make amazing embroidered bookmarks or design beautiful greetings cards? Many of us take up new hobbies when we become stay-at-home parents to stay sane and give ourselves a much-needed time out from parenting. If this sounds like you, think about how you could monetize your hobby and turn it into a business. That way, you can carry on doing what you love and Invest in your child’s future by putting your business earnings into savings.

Freelance writing

If you have a knack for writing, whether it’s long-form articles or short blog posts, you could make money by becoming a freelance writer. All you need is great grammar and a willingness to write about new topics. There are lots of blogs and agencies looking for freelance writers. Before you get started, consider finding a free SEO course so you can familiarize yourself with the terms and techniques that content writers need to know.

Virtual assistant

We all need a bit of help now and then. That’s why plenty of business owners hire virtual assistants (VAs) on a part-time or freelance basis to handle odd jobs for them. From managing accounts to answering emails, virtual assistant roles cover all sorts of skills you may already have. Take a look at job boards such as TaskRabbit and Craigslist and see who needs some help from a VA. Many VAs work with multiple clients and can quickly build up a business.

Freelance your old job

Were you an accountant who still has expert bookkeeping skills? Did you plan events for your old company before you left to become a stay-at-home parent? Whatever you were doing for work before parenting became your full-time job, consider whether or not you could use your skills on a freelance basis. You already have the expertise and perhaps even the industry contacts you need to start freelancing today.

Teaching and training

Many of us are keen to learn new skills or even hire teachers and trainers for our kids. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, you could make money as a teacher, tutor, or trainer. Whether it’s tutoring local kids, offering fitness training, or teaching another language to adults, there are many ways you can use your skills and knowledge to make money by teaching others. Find out if your fellow parents need a tutor for their kids or want an inexpensive virtual personal trainer. See what your local recreation centre has on offer in terms of classes and see if you can fill a gap.
