I’m overdue…. again. Micah was 9 days late, and baby girl W was due YESTERDAY! Yep. So much for thinking she’d come early! I’ve been dilated to 3 then 4 for the last 4 weekly appointments, no change this week from last week. So, my doctor set me up to be induced Tuesday if she doesn’t come on her own by then. With a healthy pregnancy, some doctors will let you wait as long as 42 weeks to induce, some doctors prefer to induce sooner. Don’t let your doctor push you into anything, if you feel comfortable giving baby longer to come naturally, make sure your express that to your doctor and decide together what is best for you and baby, not just for his schedule or your impatient hormones and brain.
I am sad baby girl isn’t here yet, and I could have had my doctor induce me sooner, but I really hope she comes naturally. Micah started labor on his own but did need some pitocin when I stayed dilated to 8 for many hours on end. God designed our bodies to have babies and, though our bodies no longer are the perfect design he created pre-sin, He has a plan for when and how baby is born; it’ll work out, whether medicine is used to kick-start things or not.
Home Methods to Induce Labor
That said, my impatient pregnant brain has googled and considered home ways to kick-start labor, more with Micah but also this time around. For the most part, health professionals say home methods to induce labor aren’t very effective, but a tired pregnant woman might give a few a try anyways:
Acupuncture – not for me, but apparently there is some proof correctly done acupuncture can induce labor!
Sex – releases hormones that can start labor! Or not. But it sure doesn’t hurt to try….
Long walks – might help baby drop and get you physically more in shape. don’t wear yourself out though, save some energy for labor!
Castor Oil – stimulates diarrhea which causes abdominal cramping which could cause labor to start IF your body is already ready, but be very careful because diarrhea can quickly cause dehydration and exhaustion.
Spicy foods – same idea as castor oil, it stimulates the bowels, no direct effect on labor
Herbs – evening primrose oil, red raspberry leaf, black cohosh – not really fully researched enough to know
Signs of Coming Labor
Baby drops – you might notice your belly is lower and it’s slightly easier to breath, and the little old ladies you walk past will probably comment about how baby has dropped and you are ready!
Dilation – checked at your weekly appointments. Being dilated is not a sure sign though, I’ve been dilated at 3 then 4 for 4 weeks, and with Micah I didn’t dilate at all before going into labor.
Diarrhea – body getting ready for baby and labor, or could just be what you had for supper last night….
Weight levels off, or even drops a bit
Cramps, back pains and tightenings – or Braxton-hicks contractions. Your belly might tighten or back get sore off and on, sometimes painful or painless as it gets ready or you start dilating. Don’t be fooled by inconsistent tightening, it’s only labor if they get gradually more intense and closer together.
Loose joints – my hips have been bugging me for weeks, I can’t walk in the morning if I sleep on my left side… your pelvis is getting ready to let out baby!
Nesting or super tired – trouble sleeping and exhaustion from carrying baby might be making you super tired, so take lots of naps! Or, the excitement of baby coming soon might send you into a nesting frenzy – clean and decorate and clean some more!
Signs of impending labor – lose mucous plug (bloody mucous), water breaks, contractions become stronger and closer together = Yay! get ready to go to the hospital!
