Oatmeal and rice cereal are the staples of early baby food. They are great starters by themselves, and then fantastic to mix with other foods for added taste or for thickening. Oddly, buying it in the baby aisle is WAY more expensive than buying rice or oatmeal in the normal aisles…. so make it yourself! It’s super easy!
Oatmeal Cereal Baby Food
Buy regular or minute oatmeal
Grind it to a powder using a food processor or coffee grinder
Store in an air-tight, dry and labeled container for use later!
Rice Cereal Baby Food
Buy brown rice
Grind to a powder using a food processor or coffee grinder
Store in an air-tight, dry and labeled container for use later!
To use homemade rice or oatmeal cereal
Mix 2 Tablespoons with 1/2 cup water, formula, breastmilk or juice
It’s going to look SUPER watery
Heat in microwave or on stove for a minute
Cool either on counter, or faster in the fridge
Check the consistency and add more liquid or powder as needed, then reheat
Let baby enjoy!
I frequently mix oatmeal or rice cereal with other recipes to thicken and add different flavors and nutrients, either before freezing or after thawing.
You can put pre-made rice or oatmeal through a food processor and add more liquid to make it into baby food, but this is much messier, has to be refrigerated, and won’t keep as long.
I love grinding mine with a coffee grinder too. I also tend to make 2-3 days worth a once. That way I have it ready to go when baby is hungry. Because when my youngest is hungry, he has to eat now 🙂
