I love hiking. It’s fantastic to get outside and walk among trees, rocks and plants to enjoy the beauty of creation. My kids love hiking also, but at 1 and 3 years old they can’t hike nearly as far as me, or at the same pace. So we were super excited to bring a Deuter Kid Comfort Air on our recent camping trip! This pack not only can carry either child, it is comfortable to wear, is secure for them, and has multiple storage areas.
Deuter Child Carrier – Kid Comfort Air
Deuter has a variety of child carriers to choose from, we chose the Kid Comfort Air because I’ve heard good things. So, I’m here to tell you good things: The Deuter Kid Comfort Air is fantastic! Our favorite part: the ease of carrying our kids! My husband first tried out the Kid Comfort Air in our house with our 3 year old. He weighs 36 pounds, so he not super easy to simply carry around. He was immediately impressed at how easy it was to carry our little man in the Deuter!
They walked around the house a bit, Micah looking super comfortable and Peter having no difficulty at all. This impression held true when we were out hiking during our camping trip. No matter which child was in the Deuter, the pack made it feel like carrying a backpack rather than a wiggly child. Going uphill was slightly more difficult, but hiking along was made much easier.
Deuter Child Carrier: Storage
Another of our favorite impressions of the Deuter Kid Comfort Air is the storage space. Lots of kid carriers don’t have storage, or storage parts cost additional $. The Deuter has multiple built-in storage areas including a large zipper pouch below the child’s seat, a skinnier clip-close pouch behind the child’s back and two mesh pouches on either side of the child (great for sippy cup and snack storage)!
It even came complete with an adorable little bear tucked into one of the mesh pouches. This little bear came along on our hiking adventures and is now one of Emersyn’s favorites to bring along, which is great because it’s small so I can easily tuck it away when she decides she’s done carrying it (and drops it in the mud).
Deuter Kid Comfort Air: Child Carrying
The kids’ favorite part of the Deuter Kid Comfort Air is right in the name: kid comfort. They sit on padding with padding behind their back. The child portion is adjustable in every way so the child can sit at a safe depth to have a good view and be snugly nestled in the 5 point harness. There is a clip on one side to more easily help a bigger child get in and out, plus the large kick-stand to holds the Deuter upright while loading and unloading. A couple of the adjusts are a bit hard to get to, and the crotch buckle can be a bit difficult to reach with a larger child, but once we got used to where each part is, it was a breeze.
For getting the carrier on and off, there are two handles at the top to lift and move, and the kickstand is easy to pop open and closed for stability. My 3 year old can still easily tip it over when sitting on the kickstand, it’s not a seat or child-restraint on the ground, but it helps hold the pack upright while assisting the child out.
Deuter Kid Comfort Air: Rain and Sun Shield
The Deuter kid carriers come with an option rain and sun shield, which is a fantastic little cover that simply slides into place and is held on by little hooks. The shield then cover the top and back for sun protection. Inside the sun shield is the rain cover, which simply pulls out and slides over the top and sides of the basic shield for 360 protection from rain. Sun is great for hikes, and rain is often a possibility, so having this extra protection for my kiddos is fantastic.
Deuter Kid Comfort Air: Overall
Overall, the Kid Comfort Air ROCKS. It’s big, which means it’s annoying to pack, but it’s a life saver for hiking! My kids love to run and hike, but they wear out well before any hike is complete; carrying them in the pack is much easier than carrying on my hip or shoulders. The fabric and quality feels high-caliber and I fully expect it to hold up through both of my kids and be able to pass it on to another family after that.
