The possibilities are huge, and the kids have total freedom to create, change, and imagine!
We absolutely LOVE the Build-a-House from Little Tikes. My 5 year old is all about anything construction related and loves to take things apart just to put them together a different way. Problem is, he frequently needs help putting things back together successfully. With the Build-a-House, he can put the panels back together in any order, by himself, and be successful without any adult intervention at all. He feels like a construction man, little sister helps out, and they both get to play in their house using their imagination every step of the way.
Build-a-House Set-up
The set-up took about an hour and is easiest with a power screw driver of some sort. The directions are easy to follow to put all the blue frame pieces in place and then add the roof on top. The most time-consuming part is putting all the plastic screws into the panels. The kit includes a black piece that makes putting the plastic screws in much easier, and the time is totally worth it since the screws can’t come back out and get lost. (Seriously ya’ll, this is AWESOME, the screws are moveable but stuck within the panels so my kids absolutely CANNOT lose them, no matter how good they are at losing everything else!).
After the set-up is complete, the house is ready to play. Don’t forget to put 3 AAA batteries in the kid’s drill, show them how a panel goes in, and sit back and enjoy the show. The hardest part of putting the panels in is catching the bottom edge inside the top edge of the piece below it. If the edges are caught correctly, the pieces fit better and stay better. But, if your kiddo can’t catch the edges and doesn’t do it right, it will still go together, stay together, and work just fine!
Build-a-House Fun
From this point forward, the kids can use the power drill or screw driver to place panels on any of the 4 walls (2 columns on each wall) in any order they want. (Try not to panic when the door is above the mailbox!) Then take them off and do it again. And again. And again. The windows and door pieces have “L” and “R” on the back to indicate which side of that thing they are. My 5 year old can associate these with Left and Right, and it’s helping him learn which is which.
The panels go on and come off easily with just a few twists of the screw. They attach firmly enough that the wind doesn’t easily blow them off. There are exactly enough panels to cover the entire house, no extras. Two windows, one door and doorframe, a mailbox, and a few other pieces of different textures, colors, and shapes. I love that the different pieces give the kids lots of options to create the walls however they imagine. They like to use a few pieces to make a “McDonalds window” that is the right size for happy meals!
The whole house is kid-tough and feels like it will hold up for years of use, building, and “de-building.” There were extra kid screws just in case, but I don’t think we’ll need them as the screws stay in and seem to hold up really well. My son is bummed that the panels can only go on horizontally, not vertically, but it would be a complex puzzle to make them all fit right if they went on vertically as well. Having only one direction, horizontal, makes it more straightforward for little minds.
Build-a-House Cons
Really, the only bummer is that the panels don’t have any sort of storage. If they aren’t on the house, they are lying on the ground. We will set a tub outside for panels that aren’t on the house so they don’t blow away or get trampled by little feet. Other than the lack of panel storage, the only thing we noticed is that the peak of the roof is pointed inward instead of upward, and has little holes it in. This simply means rain gets in through that space instead of running off the roof. The whole thing doesn’t even begin to be rain-proof, though, since it has pieces with openings and big windows and door, so it doesn’t really make any difference. (So don’t plan on it being a rain shelter!)
The Build-a-House does not have any other features, like a sink or stove or anything inside. My kids will haul some of their own toys inside of it to play house and let their imaginations run wild, no problemo.
Build-a-House Overall
Overall, the Little Tikes Build-a-House is a favorite addition to our backyard. Both of my kids love it and I’m envisioning years of fun to come with it. Between building, deconstructing, and playing house with it, there is never a dull moment.
