If you’ve been a stay-at-home-mom for while, the prospect of going back to work and building up a career can be a daunting one. However, getting back to work can be extremely fulfilling, and a good way of showing your kids the value of hard work and ambition. If you want to get your career back on track after looking after the kids, but you aren’t sure where to start, check out these helpful tips that should make the transition much easier for you than you might imagine…

Brush Up Your Qualifications

If you’re serious about getting your career back after taking care of babies, one of the best things you can potentially do is to brush up your qualifications. Depending on how long you’ve been out of the workplace, things may have moved on a lot in your industry and updating your skills will really help you to show employers you still have it. Of course, you may even want to take your career in a whole new direction and learning new skills and gaining new qualifications will help you with this.

If you’re worried about finding the time to go back to school, there is no need because it is now possible to learn online in your own time around the kids and family responsibilities. You can take everything from a nurse practitioner program online to your accountant qualifications and… well anything you can think of really. As long as you have internet access and determination, there is nothing to stop you upskilling.

Use Your Network

Rightly or wrongly, getting a job and re-establishing your career still has a lot to do with who you know. So, when you’ve decided that you’re ready to get back on the horse and start working again, do whatever you can to re-establish previous work connections and build new ones. If your network knows you’re looking for work, they will mobilize to help you.

Market Yourself

In the 21st Century, if you want to get a career going, you need to be fearless about marketing yourself. So, set up social media profiles, write a rocking resume that highlights your qualifications and work achievements, and which shows the skills you’ve learned as a stay-at-home-mom in a positive light. Update old content, highlight anything you think particularly important, and then get it in front of as many eyes as you possibly can.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to make a positive difference in your community. It is also an excellent way to bring your skills and resume up to date. If you’ve been out of work for a while, it can be difficult to get into the swing of things and many employers may be wary of giving you a chance, but with some decent volunteer work under your belt, this should not be a problem.

Don’t Give Up

It could take 6 months or more before you are offered the right role, so it is important that you don’t throw in the towel too early. If you truly think pursuing a career is the right thing to do, you need to be patient and trust that it will happen eventually.
