Diono Radian RXT Review
A good car seat is about the most important thing to have, and one of the only things a kid will use for many years in a row. But, there are so many to choose from and they are so expensive, you definitely don’t want to get a seat you won’t like! I’ve tried out a lot of seats in the past year, the two brands I recommend to friends and family (because I like them best of all) are from Diono and Britax. I recently received the Diono Radian RXT to review and it is a fantastic car seat!
Diono Radian RXT: The Good
My favorite feature of the Diono Radian RXT is it’s long life – the Diono Radian RXT can be used from infancy all the way through booster seat. Though all convertible car seats seem to swallow newborns alive, Emersyn at 4 months fits beautifully in the Diono Radian RXT and seemed to love the seat. The 90 degree angle (as compared to a smoother curve of most seats) actually seemed to be more comfortable for her and she enjoyed sitting in it, which is amazing because she typically hates getting in a car seat. The fabric and cushioning also seem quite comfortable, and the baby inserts make the seat usable for any size.
The seat can be used rear-facing, forward-facing or as a booster seat up to 120 pounds! The booster seat is an added awesomeness, most convertible car seats can’t claim that ability.
The Diono Radian RXT is easy to install either by LATCH or by threading a seat belt through the appropriate slots. Peter has a hard time threading a seat belt sometimes, and a harder time moving the crotch strap, because his hands are a little too big for the openings, but the seat’s fabric has slits in it to reach through so he doesn’t have to stuff his hands through the sides. Plus, the angle piece to make the Diono Radian RXT sit at the correct angle while rear-facing is actually really easy to put on, secure in place, and take back off when no longer needed.
I have read complaints online saying the Diono Radian RXT takes up too much space front to back while rear facing. It does take up a lot of space, but really only about an inch more that other convertible seats we’ve used, which is totally worth my decreased leg room for the increased rear-facing weight limits. The Diono Radian RXT can be rear-facing until 45 pounds! Which is awesome because rear-facing is WAY safer in most accident scenarios.
This is my favorite: another huge benefit of the Diono Radian RXT is that’s it’s sides are short and skinny. A) This means Micah can reach his toys on the seat beside him and reach Emersyn in the car seat next to him. I love that he can reach baby E, because he plays with her and sometimes will give her a pacifier or his finger when she cries. Or trade toys with her. B) This also means that 3 Diono seats can fit across the back of my car! Or 2 seats and me! It’s awesome to be able to fit another person in my car! We use the Diono for Micah and the Britax for Emersyn because this way they can sit next to each other and a third person can fit in the back. We would never be able to do that with normal convertible seats!
The Diono Radian RXT, like the Diono Rainier, folds. So, if I am away from home and need the seat space, I can easily take it out, fold it up, and keep it in the trunk where it takes up much less space than the average seat.
The Diono Radian RXT is also equipped with the SafeStop for extra protection for front-facing up to 40 pounds. And big shoulder protectors for extra padding and to help keep the chest clip where it belongs. Plus a cup holder that fits in 4 spots and a little slot for Emergency Information by the harness release. Oh! And the SuperLATCH is awesome – when open it stays open until clicked onto the car’s LATCH piece, which means no holding the button down while pushing or pulling; makes it much easier to place and remove!
Diono Radian RXT: The Bad
There are only two things I don’t like about the Diono Radian RXT. First, the seat has to be taken out and the harness re-threaded to change the height. Definitely not as convenient as the squeeze-handle adjustment a lot of convertible seats have now. BUT the ability to unthread the harness is necessary so it can be totally unthreaded when it’s used as a booster seat. Anyway, it’s not hard at all to take the seat out, unthread, and rethread. Second, it’s a little hard to tighten, it has to be pulled straight out and a little down, which is fine for forward facing, but hard to do rear facing.
Ultimately, when it comes to recommending car seats to other people, this Diono Radian RXT or the Diono Rainier tie for first with the Britax Clicktight that I recently reviewed. I love this seat for Micah as he is forward-facing, takes up less width in the seat, and can triple as a booster when Micah gets big enough. The Britax seat differs in being easier to tighten in Emersyn’s rear-facing position and the ClickTight installation is awesome. Once Emersyn is forward-facing (almost 2 years from now) I fully expect to put both kids in Diono seats. I love the shape, comfort and possibilities that the Diono seats allow.

This looks like a great Carseat
These are awesome seats and we have had a few of them. No complaints from me on these, highly recommend them.
Just an FYI, you say it’s hard to tighten, but if you tighten it using the belts on the back and then just remove the slack using the strap between the legs it is SUPER easy! Takes me seconds and no huffing and puffing, simply place your hand on the back of the seat, grab both belts, pull on them and pull the strap in the middle at the same time
