Every delivery is different. Totally different. Write a birth plan and develop an idea of how you’d like to cope with the pain, but be flexible in case things don’t go the way you planned. There are some things, though, that you can expect:
Expect to check in then head straight to OB. Do not stop in the emergency room or visit your great aunt in the isolation room on third floor. Don’t pass go or collect $200. Don’t worry, the contractions will make you want to head straight there anyways.
Expect lots of equipment in the delivery room. Though hopefully most of it will be hidden in closets or under a cloth on some sort of delivery set-up table. Things like IVs, a baby monitor, gloves, gowns, forceps and more. You won’t necessarily need everything you see in the room, but it’s good for it to be there just in case.
Expect to have an IV put in. Unless you are totally against it, an IV is the best way to quickly and effectively give you pain medication, fluids, and more, including pitocin after the baby is born to help your uterus clamp down and kick start your healing process.
Expect people. Micah had 10+ people in the room since he had some complications. For Emersyn, it was just a nurse and a doctor. Either way, multiple people will be in and out of the room throughout the whole process. Don’t worry, it’s their job. They aren’t judging last night you shaved your legs or if the nail polish you put on last time you could reach your toes is chipped. They are there to help you deliver safely.
Expect an Gyne bed: a bed that the foot drops off of. So they can deliver baby without a bed in the way. If you have pain meds or an epidural, expect to have to stay in the bed. Otherwise, walk around with your husband or nurse, walking might help with the pain and might help things progress.
Expect baby equipment. Like a baby warmer, baby blankets, and all sorts of baby-sized medical equipment. Again, baby won’t necessarily need all the equipment in the room, it’s there just in case.
Expect water. But no other food or drink, just in case they have to rush you to surgery for some reason.
Expect the nurse to do a quick check-over of baby before handing him over to you. But don’t let the nurse keep him too long, the sooner baby gets next to your skin and then starts breastfeeding, the better.
Be open and honest! Talk to your doctor and nurses, tell them your expectations and listen to their advice. Ask questions as you think of them. Labor may go quickly or slowly and there are lots of variables that can change the way things go. Be flexible and open-minded. Good luck!

I;m due in about two months and this was a great post! I’m glad you mentioned that although there will be a lot of equipment around, it is all for precaution. As a FTM, you tend to worry about those little things. I hate that there is no food or drink! I don’t do well with an empty stomach! Yikes!

The amount of people that came in and out of my room was the biggest (and most annoying) surprise to me when I was in the hospital. Even after you deliver it seems like you never get an hour to yourself without somebody coming in, even during the night they check on you all the time.
