8 Great Teething Tips and Tools
Teething can be a miserable time for both mom and baby, so here are a few tips, tricks and great teethers I have found or heard about. Every baby is different, so don’t worry if the first three don’t work, keep trying!
Rib bones
Win-win for dad and baby! Eat a delicious rack of ribs, then save the bones for baby. They make a great teether! The bones are hard to help the teeth break through the gums, easy to hold on to, and safe for chewing. We keep a container with bones in our fridge for use anytime!
Frozen Carrot Sticks
Peel a carrot stick and put it in the freezer, then pull it out for a cold, hard teether. As a bonus, baby will suck nutrients right out of it! Throw it away when it’s thawed so baby doesn’t choke of little chunks, unless she’s old enough to just eat it! We don’t do this much because baby E doesn’t like to hold on to the cold carrot, but other moms have reported great results! I’ve also heard frozen cucumbers work great.
Teether Toys
Everyone claims to have the best teether. And a lot of teethers are so similar it doesn’t really matter. We have hand and foot teethers that Emersyn enjoys chewing on, warm or frozen. Micah prefered to chew on the teethers bead rings and rattles. Micah doesn’t appreciate it when Emersyn thinks Micah’s books make the best teethers.
Nuby Teether and Wacky Ring
This Nuby teether is amazing. We actually got our first from a friend and I kind of laughed at it’s odd appearance and personal little carrying case. Then I had to take back my skepticism because it’s Emersyn’s absolute favorite and I’m not even sure why. She loves it and chews on both the textured “fuzzy” side and the harder ring side. This teether in particular was a lifesaver when she was working on her first tooth, I even put her to bed with it a few times, and I was thrilled to get another from Nuby since we are forever losing things.
The wacky ring is also a spectacular teether that has different surfaces for different teeth (the different shapes and surfaces get to the different areas of the mouth better). Plus it has two little cloth pieces sticking up that Emersyn loves to suck on and soak in drool. You can even buy these two teethers as a set! Win-win!
Rub baby’s Gums
Sometimes just using your finger to rub baby’s sore gums can help ease the pain. Emersyn has recently developed a hate of my finger in her mouth and screams louder, but it used to help.
Tylenol or Ibuprofen for Pain or High Fever

Teething gel or tabs
Among the baby medications you will find teething gel and teething tablets. I haven’t actually used any, though I do have some in my cupboard. Some moms I talk to think the gel is best, some prefer the tablets, and some think it’s all a ploy to make money and buy a rack of ribs instead.
Stock Up
Keep a variety of teethers handy or in the fridge, the desired shape and texture is different for each baby, for each area of the mouth, and sometimes the teether that soothed all squeals in the morning might just makes the screams louder in the evening. One day Emersyn thought the absolute best teether was the wrong end of Micah’s plastic spoon. Whatever. Babies are allowed to change their opinions too right?
Cuddle
I know, those screams hurt your ears. And sometimes your patience and your heart just can’t take anymore and you need to put baby in her swing or crib and walk away. But if you can handle it, cuddle baby or let her sit in your lap. Just having you near, (smelling you, feeling you, hearing you) will help soothe baby. Sing a soft song, rock, shake a rattle, or just sit together. Just be aware of your own breaking point so you know if/when you need to walk away for a bit (there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting baby cry alone for a bit to regain your own sanity, it’s way better than shaking, screaming at or throwing said screaming bundle of wiggles and tears).
