7 Best (Most Affordable) Dust Free Cat Litters in 2020

Dusty cat litter can easily disrupt a cat’s breathing, especially if they already have issues. Not only that, it’s just plain bothersome to clean up after dusty litter. There are tons of dust free litters out there, but how do you find a great dust free cat litter, at a great price? With this guide, of course!

What to Look for in Dust Free Cat Litter

Not sure where to start? Check these things out before you buy your next dust free litter:

Texture

Cats can be notoriously picky with litter. What a lot of people overlook is texture, which plays a big part in their willingness to use a litter. Large granules do produce less dust, but they’re not always easy on the paws. If you have a picky kitty, look for dust free litter with a finer texture.

Materials

We always suggest natural products for cats. Why use chemicals when there’s a perfectly good natural formula? Keep in mind that cats often accidentally ingest some litter. You’ll have peace of mind, and know your cat isn’t eating harmful compounds with a safe, natural litter. Some cats don’t have this problem, but if you have kittens, choose a safe formula.

Budget

Litter box duty is a pain, no matter how much you love your cats. While cost shouldn’t be your only criteria, it really is an important one. There are plenty of affordable, dust free cat litters. Remember that quality isn’t always directly related to higher price.

Clumping

To clump or not to clump? If you’re always stuck cleaning the litter box, you know how helpful a clumping litter is. It keeps the area around the box cleaner, and tends to produce less dust too.

Best Dust Free Litter Reviews

Ready to see the best of the best? Here’s what’s on our list:

Best Hypo-Allergenic Litter: Boxiecat Clumping Clay Clumping Litter

The Boxiecat litter is one of our favorites, and not just for the price! The formula is 99.9% dust free, which competes with the best of the best, in any category. If you’re on a budget, and have a cat with allergies (or you do), you’ll want to try this out. It’s unscented, but don’t worry. It does a great job of containing odors nonetheless.

One thing we have to mention: it lasts a lot longer than you’d think if you judged by weight alone. Compared to other litters, this one lasts at least twice as long, which is a huge bonus when you have multiple cats.

Pros:

  • Virtually no tracking
  • Budget friendly, extremely long lasting
  • Unscented, but contains smells
  • Hardly any dust

Cons:

  • Sometimes sticks to litter box

Best Wood Litter: ökocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter

Clay litters typically produce the most dust, but since this is a wood litter, that’s not a concern. It’s natural, sustainable, and totally biodegradable. We had to include this one on our list, since it’s not only affordable, it’s also really convenient. You can just flush the clumps once you’re done for a hassle free job.

There’s no added perfumes, since the wood naturally absorbs smell on its own. Not only did we love the price, we also loved how long it lasts!

Pros:

  • All natural, biodegradable
  • Flushable
  • Forms good, solid clumps
  • Good odor control
  • Very long lasting

Cons:

  • Tracks more for some cats (try the long hair formula, if so)

Lowest Price: Purina Tidy Cats Pure Nature Cat Litter

When it comes to bargains, you’ll have trouble beating this one. While it’s not advertised as much, this is definitely a dust free cat litter (99.9% dust free). Purina is well known for their pet products, so we were thrilled to find an all natural cat litter. It contains odors really well, making it ideal for homes with multiple cats. If you miss a day of scooping, don’t worry, the smells stay out of the rest of your home.

We’re big fans of clumping litter, because the easier the box is to clean, the better. It’s also a good solution for picky cats, since the texture is so fine.

Pros:

  • Ideal for multiple cats
  • Natural pine scent
  • Forms solid clumps
  • Very affordable

Cons:

  • The scent is rather strong

Best Odor Control: Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Litter

Of all the odor containing litters, this one really exceeds expectations. Since it’s dust free too, you don’t have to worry about extra mess. Keeping litter under control in a multi-cat household is always a challenge. With this kitty litter, it’s at least a much easier task.

It doesn’t have a super strong fragrance like some litters do, so it’s ideal for sensitive noses. It clumps quickly, so even if you have to scoop a couple times a day, it’s not a big deal.

Pros:

  • Great odor control
  • Fairly lightweight
  • Forms clumps quickly

Cons:

  • Darker color makes it a little tough to see clumps

For Sensitive Cats: Purina Yesterday’s News Unscented Cat Litter

Some cats get finicky about using certain litter because of the texture. While we love the dust free formula, our cats love the texture. It comes in pellet form, which is one of the best ways to ensure there’s no dust. Pellets might seem like they have a rougher texture, but this litter is actually really soft. It’s the ideal solution for cats with sensitive paws, and noses.

Pros:

  • Fine, soft texture
  • Low tracking formula
  • Made with recycled paper
  • Very absorbent

Cons:

  • Doesn’t clump

Top Lightweight Litter: Cat’s Pride Premium Clumping Clay Cat Litter

We had to include this Cat’s Pride litter, not just because it’s great for multiple cats, but it’s easy on you too. Litter can be a pain to carry and pour, so lightweight litters are a great solution. It’s not scented, so you don’t have to worry about fragrances irritating your cats. If you have more than one cat, you want the litter that makes cleaning, pouring, and maintaining easy. This litter clumps quickly, with hard clumps that are easy to scoop.

Pros:

  • Forms solid clumps quickly
  • No perfumes or dyes
  • Lightweight and easy to pour

Cons:

  • Somewhat chunkier texture

Best for Automatic Litter Boxes: Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat Ultra Unscented

Dr. Elsey’s is a big name in cat litter, although it’s a well deserved reputation! Of the brand’s litter selections, we included this one for a few reasons. First, it’s dust free, which was key. Next, it forms good clumps that don’t break during scooping. If you have an automatic litter box, that’s one of the most important things to look for. Of course, if you sift or scoop by hand, it’s no fun picking up pieces of clumps either. It’s unscented, hypoallergenic, 100% natural, and great for multiple cats.

Pros:

  • Good for automatic litter boxes
  • Clumps don’t break
  • Hypoallergenic and totally natural
  • Keeps messes from leaking

Cons:

  • Some tracking

Our Top Pick!

Which is the best, and most affordable dust free litter? We ranked our litters based on overall value, ease of use, lack of mess, and health for cats using it.

In the end, the Boxiecat formula won out. Why?

If you’re looking for dust-free litter, it’s hard to beat a hypoallergenic litter that still contains odors and clumps well. Of course, the price is an attractive bonus, as is the impressively long time it lasts.
