Being cooped up inside during the winter months leaves little room for having fun indoors without paying entrance fees and fighting crowds at local indoor playgrounds, malls, and museums. We’re really on a tight budget these months so I’ve started to come up with some great ideas of things we can do as a family to enjoy our days stuck inside!
Game Night: While the kids would instantly swarm to the electronic games, we have come to the conclusion that they’re really missing out on the ‘old fashioned’ board games time together. We’ve gathered up some games that are age-appropriate for our kiddos, and when we starting to get bored, we break out the games! We enjoy the classics like Chutes & Ladders, and have discovered our love for the cooperative games from Peaceable Kingdom.
Movie Night: This isn’t too difficult to do, and we do it more often than I’d like to admit – but the kids really enjoy it. We use a combination of our current movies on DVD, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Our local movie store also has tons of kids movies that are FREE to rent for 5 days!
Stepping that up a notch means that we create a huge living room fort and watch from inside.
Baking Goodies: My kids are always up for a little baking session. They really enjoy helping to dump the ingredients into the bowl and my oldest is getting better at reading and measurements, so I use it as an educational time, too! One of our favorite things to make? A Giant Pizza Cookie!!!
Jack’s Pizza Party: Speaking of Pizza – we’re always well-stocked with Jack’s Pizza. Whenever I see a good deal I buy a bunch, then it’s only a few bucks for my family to have a fun and easy dinner! Of course we always pair the pizza with something, like fruit or salad. Then there’s even still a little room for dessert! One of our favorites is root beer floats!
We very much prefer Jack’s Pizza, because of it’s 100 percent real Wisconsin Cheese and preservative free crust. Jack’s Pizza is made in the Midwest, which is maybe why I love it so much! It’s just like home for me here in Minnesota!
Music Party: Under any other circumstances I’d call it a ‘dance’ party – but we dance, sing, and even set up pretend drum sets to create the music in the background. Letting loose with the kids and just putting on some good music, and doing crazy stuff like dumping every toy out of it’s bin and turning the bins into a professional drum set – that’s for sure going to be a hit!
Or of course, when the entire day is shot, like when it’s -40 degrees outside, we can combine all of our activities – and I can win the WHOLE Day! Eating Jack’s Pizza, playing a few board games with root beer floats, jamming to music, baking some cookies or warm pretzels, and ending the evening with a ‘cold’ family movie!
These are all great ideas. We do a lot of game nights and movie night at our house.

We have family movie nights pretty frequently, and I would love to branch out a little. I love your other ideas and I know the kids will get a kick out of everyone being engaged and together.

Oh what fun! I ove the movie fort idea and we are huge advocated of “old fashioned” family game night in our family. Pizza is often on the menu on those days and I make a batch of fresh popped organic pop corn tossed in maple syrup and cinnamon. Totally decadent 🙂
When the kids were smaller, we used to have nightly game nights. Looking at that pizza is making me hungry though.
