Garden: Do Flowers REALLY make everything better?

I started this year with GREAT intentions on my garden.   I wanted to get all of the vegetable garden planted, but then also getting TONS of flowers planted.

Empty bed

I wanted ALL of these boxes filled with flowers galore.

I even promised myself that I’d be stopping at all these sales that are happening right now as the portable garden centers are clearancing out their perennials..

But – I’m not sure I really want to have those extra responsibilities of flowers just yet…

I mean, I *LOVE* Flowers, don’t get me wrong.

If I had my way – I’d have flowers on my table every day of the week…Or even better yet, I’d rather have them by my sink – that way there is a slightly more pleasant sight while washing my dishes.

Anything to mask the horribleness of dishes.

Dishes in the Sink

Flowers always make my insides happy and giddy.   But to care for them in your garden looks like so much WORK!

This year I started my vegetable garden with a flower right in the middle behind the tomatoes.  I read somewhere that having flowers planted around the vegetable garden will help to attract bees – and therefore to pollinate your vegetables. color vegetable garden

And I wanted EVERYTHING to be perfect….

But you know what happened?

The flowers bloomed – and they were beautiful – but then… they were done blooming, and the plant died.

done blooming

WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?!!

The flowers didn’t even overlap with my vegetables flowering.

For those flower experts out there:

Do the Annual plants really just last for a little while while blooming and then die? Or did I kill it somehow?

What kind of flowers should I plant that are awesome and easy to care for?

HAHA really funny. Sounds like my gardening attempts. I think flowers do make a positive difference, it’s just trying to keep the darn thing alive thats the problem!

Thats a great idea about planting the flower to attract bees. Ive got to remember that for next year. I would love to do flowers in the future. I just do not have much experience with them though.

I have not planted any flowers yet either! I seem to always forget them to water them in the front yard! I used to plant flowers years ago when I was not so busy! Maybe I will plant some!

No you did not kill you plant! Unfortunely they only bloom for their season. Meaning flowers unless stated ever blooming will go through their growing cycle. I have different plants that start in may and when they are done the next ones start. I have several different ones so something is always blooming. Your annuals will bloom all summer but will not come back. My daughter works in a nursery and said that Russian Sage (if yiu can grow that there) will bloom all summer and the Bees love it. No work to it either! Love that part. Hope this helps. =)

      Thanks for the great tip!

Yeah – this plant was an annual, so I figured it would bloom all summer and then die – not just bloom for 3 weeks and die, it’s kind of dissapointing, but it was SO pretty while it lasted 😀

I haven’t quite started on my garden yet. I am planning on a rooftop garden and I am putting to mind the thing about flowers in the corners to attract more bees. I’m not too sure why your flowers died I was thinking that they didn’t get enough nutrients but I could be wrong. By the way, my hubby is taking a whole alternative route by starting an aquaponic garden.

I can’t answer you question but I bet the couple that lived in my house before me could! She had this very pretty flower garden planted in our front yard. She has it set up with perennials perfectly so that when one type of flowed dies, the next is blooming – it’s absolutely amazing. And of course, one day my husband and I decided to “weed” it only to discovered we pulled out several flowers!!!

Oh no!! that’s what I’m terrified of! When I get everything planted I need to know what is a plant and what is a weed! I guess you learn as you go, but that’s exactly the type of garden I want to set up in my front yard. But it’s going to take a lot of research.

Hi Amy–do yourself a favor and find someone at a local nursery or even a knowledgeable and helpful sort at Lowe’s that can tell you what PERENNIALS will work for the way you want your flower beds to look, the type of soil, and the amount of sun they get—then stuff them full and let them grow! You will know which are your plants and which are weeds easily enough– and if you ever want a little more color, it is easy to pick up a few packs of annuals and plunk them in at strategic points amid all your flowers that will return year after year.

Seems like all the flowers I used to grow didn’t last that long. Some of them were stolen so I stopped growing flowers. Sticked to veggies and herbs

We tend to have a difficult time with flowers. We’ve used miracle gro, cut off dead ones, etc. but…they never seen to thrive. Some people just have the knack for this stuff…we don’t happen to be one of them in this household

You probably only got annuals – they just grow that year. You need to buy perennials
    – they will come up every year. If just starting out check online sites or ask where you buy them what is best for your spot. That way you can do your garden so that you have things blooming most of the year. It takes time to learn what the flowers look like once their done so you dont pull them out later and think their weeds. Tulips the squirrels like to dig up and replant in the neighbors yard usually LOL

I would hate to meet the person that doesn’t at least “think” about a smile when they see flowers. Yes they really do make everything better for me. Granted, I would rather not buy cut flowers, I prefer them with roots in my yard or in a pot in the house. They are little dots of sunshine! I like your step planters!

Some flowers are only for a certain period like spring, fall etc. But I think you killed them, lol. They really should have lasted longer. I have my trial and errors for sure! I have had all kinds of problems this year but I think its due to the weather. This has been the most disapointing year ever for my garden, lol
