Tips for Exercising on Vacation

Going on vacation is a great way to recharge your batteries and come back feeling refreshed. It can also be a time when even the most diligent person can have their fitness routine derailed. Exercising on vacation isn’t always on people’s minds, but it is possible.

How to Exercise While on Vacation

Sneaking in a workout during your trip feels great, but can it can be a little more difficult without access to your regular gym. You may have a home gym in your Nashville townhouse, but it may be more challenging to find a spot to work out while you’re away from home.

Because you will not be engaged in your typical routine, it may be harder to workout with the same frequency or intensity as you do at home. This is ok. Start by resetting your expectations.

  • Investigate the local area–before you go, research the local area to identify any gyms or fitness centers nearby. Your hotel may even offer complimentary or reduced-price day passes. Also, there may be bike trails that you can traverse for adventure. To up your fitness routine while traveling, use a bicycle power meter on your rental or personal bike to track your progress.
  • Pack exercise equipment–this is as simple as throwing a yoga mat or resistance band in your suitcase. Don’t forget to pack proper workout clothes, too.
  • Don’t forget the hotel fitness center–many hotels offer at least some sort of basic exercise equipment. Common offerings typically seen include free weights, elliptical machines, exercise bikes and treadmill
  • Take the long way–find a parking spot further away, walk to dinner, stroll around a museum, or find a local park where you can spend the day hiking. Incorporate these things into your specific itinerary so they become a natural part of your trip.
  • Go on an adventure–seek out activities intended to keep you active, such as kayaking, white water rafting, or biking. Many areas have business that rent out equipment to keep you moving. You’ll get moving, and build great memories.
  • Follow the 2 day rule–never go more than 2 consecutive days without getting some sort of exercise in.
  • Work out in your hotel room–Youtube is a great resource to find workout videos. You’ll find virtually every kind of workout available, some that use your own body weight and do not need weights or other equipment.

Don’t forget to enjoy the local cuisine during your trip. A vacation is a special occasion, and a time to enjoy yourself. It is not the time to restrict yourself from trying the best eats the area has to offer. That being said, vacation is not an excuse to go overboard, either.

Visit a New City, and Get Exploring

The hardest part of your vacation should not be figuring out how you’re going to work out, it should be settling on a destination. You have a limitless amount of choices, from weekend getaways, to month long sabbaticals, each with great sites begging to be explored. So plan that trip, and don’t forget to pack your exercise gear!
