The Chinese celebrate their new year with the new moon that appears between January 21 and February 20. The Chinese New Year –– also known as spring festival –– is considered one of the many lunar years they have in Asia, but it’s one of the most celebrated if not the most. - It started with a monster
According to legend, the Chinese New Year started with a monster named Nian. It would eat the village people, especially children, and terrorize the entire population. This used to happen with the beginning of each new year. One day, a wise man came while the villagers were hiding and promised them he’d take care of the beast. He used red color and noise to scare the beast off. Since then, it has been a tradition to wear red clothes, hang red lights, and make noise as a celebration of the new year and a means to scare off the beast.
The Chinese are somewhat a superstitious people who believe in many myths and legends. Some of them also believe in fortune telling and tarot cards and the likes. The Chinese New Year is a family celebration. That is why its advent is accompanied by many trips by people seizing the opportunity to come home during the festivities. Over its 15-day course, the festival is estimated to bring in 2-3 billion trips, between planes, cars, trains, and other means of transportation.
- Boyfriend/girlfriend for hire
It’s a bit of a disappointment in China if young people remain single for long periods of time. So, while those single people return home to visit their families for the holiday, many resort to renting a boyfriend or a girlfriend. It’s a guaranteed way to avoid being hassled by your parents for remaining single.
- No showers
They believe that showering washes away good luck on the new year’s day. So, you showering, cleaning, and throwing out garbage are a no-no. So, best make use of that cleaning day right before the new year’s day. Hair cuts, shaving, breaking things, and using scissors or knives are also some of the things that are considered a taboo during the new year.

It’s a time for fun and festivities, and it’s the longest public holiday in the country. The Chinese New Year is truly an exciting event full of mythos, legends, and rich cultural heritage that makes China so distinct. If you wanted to talk about the traits of the festival and the quirks, it’d take hours. From children getting money in red envelopes to desserts that have special meanings, the new year is full of surprises and twists.
