It seems like every article and every discussion related to retirement either begins with or quickly devolves into a conversation about money. It is the 800 lb gorilla in the room. At its heart, retirement is all about how to keep living well when you are no longer bringing in a regular paycheck.
While that is still the biggest consideration, it is not the only consideration. Planning for retirement is a sensitive issue because it is a little different for everyone. For one thing, retirement means different things to different people. So it is hard to develop universal rules for retirement when it is a concept that is open to interpretation.
That said, there are some things that everyone contemplating retirement should consider. And there is a surprising amount of it that has little if anything to do with money. Here are just a few:
Is Your House Ready for Retirement?
To reiterate, it is not just your bank account that has to be ready for retirement, but also your house. Given the aging of our society, it’s a good thing there are a number of specialty products that enable the elderly to continue living a normal life even after dealing with limited mobility.
If you are starting to have knee, hip, and back pain now, you can expect it to get worse as you age. That means those stairs which bring you such joy right now might become a challenge later. You don’t have to sell the house, you can just take steps to be sure you and your house are ready for retirement. You can install an elevator or an Easy Climber stair lift for example.
That also means making certain the neighborhood you are in is a good place for you to be in your later years. Are the sidewalks in good repair? Are the stores easy to get to? How about public transportation? You might not choose to drive as much as you do now. Before making final decisions about retirement, do a quick audit of your home to make sure it is as ready as you are.
What Will You do with Your Time?
All too often, people plan for their retirement without giving a thought to what they will do with their time. Some people have a hard time figuring out what to do with a two week vacation. That is simply too much unstructured time for them to deal with. After a long vacation, people are more than ready to get back to work. They often do so with restored energy.
Retirement lasts for a lot longer than two weeks. So after you take a little time to rest, go on that world tour, and empty your bucket list, then what? This is the point where a lot of retirees decide that retirement is not all it was cracked up to be. They either go back to work, find a part-time job in the service industry just to stay busy, or do some volunteer work.
All of these options beat sinking slowly into madness. But even that option is on the table if you don’t take the time to figure out what it is you are going to do with the final 20 or 30 years of your life. You don’t want to wait until the moment is upon you before you figure that out.
Do You Want to Retire at All?
WebMD put it succinctly. Though they put it in the form of a question, the conclusion is the same: Early retirement, early death. We romanticize early retirement as if it is the ultimate goal in life. Make enough money when young so you don’t have to work later.
But that turns out to be a bad plan for a lot of people. Great men and women of history didn’t retire. They did the thing that made them great until they couldn’t do it anymore. When they had to stop doing that, they found something else to do, a second act to their lives.
So as you plan your investments that will see you through retirement, don’t forget to make sure your house is ready for retirement. Make sure you have a plan for what you will do with that time. And be certain that retirement is really the best thing for you to do.
