When you are looking for a great family-friendly vacation, add San Antonio, Texas to your short list! There are lots of family-friendly options, one of our favorite being Sea World San Antonio!
Sea World has something for everyone. There are shows, a play area, rides, splash pad, and (of course) animals! We spent one entire day exploring the park and could have easily spent another day there! If you want to visit Aquatica as well, add at least a day there!
Initially I was concerned that there wouldn’t be enough kid-friendly activities. Boy was I wrong!!! My kids LOVED the handful of kid rides! Plus the rides are in a kid’s area complete with a large splash pad, a small 0-3 splash pad, a small playground, and a large maze of rope tunnels and platforms to explore.
Most of the kid attractions have walls so kiddos can only leave near where they came in. The rope tunnels have multiple entrances and exits, so make sure your kids know where to find you if they come out a different spot than they went into. I love that all the kid-only attractions are together, so we don’t have to wander the whole park to enjoy them.
The kid rides are fun! Varying is “scariness”, there is something for each kiddo in your family. And adults can ride along to keep kids company (and because it’s fun!). We were there on a Friday early in the season, so there was very little wait time at any ride, kid or adult. Expect some waiting in line if you go on a busier day.
My 5 year old also enjoyed a couple adult rides that he was tall enough to ride! Especially the Journey to Atlantis. Check out the rides online to see which are kid friendly. All of the adult rides are fun! And each ride was much smoother than I’m used to with rollercoasters! My favorite was the Great White, though the Wave Breaker was way more fun than I expected! Overall, super fun for the thrill-seeker that still lives in this mom!
Don’t forget the shows! Check the show schedule online before you go so you can plan your day. They vary from entertaining to educational, most with a combination of both. We adored Pets Ahoy with all sorts of pets doing tricks across the stage. Hilarious and cute with a reminder to adopt pets from your local animal shelter.
Sea Lion High was also a cute and funny show with two Sea Lions rushing to complete their courses before graduation so they could get scholarships from the otter! Of course high school has a selfish cheerleader type, some friends encouraging the seals along, and a few silly professors!
Killer Whales Up Close is the show to see to learn about killer whales. One Ocean also features the killer whales in a more artistic manner. Both area great shows with huge, incredible orcas. If you sit in the splash zone, expect to get wet!
Ocean Discovery features dolphins, beluga whales, and macaws playing with their trainers and showing off their moves while the trainers educate the crowd about each animal.
The shows were all incredible. Made even better by the huge smiles on all the trainers’ faces. I’m sure they had to be smiling since they were putting on a show, but the seemed genuinely happy to be there, doing their job, caring for the animals. The way the trainers talked about and interacted with the animals left me feeling like they truly cared about each animal and about improving the world for all sea life.
Between shows and rides, take time to visit the exhibits as well. Before you even show your ticket to enter the park, hang a sharp left to visit the dolphins and sharks! Inside the park, visit the penguins. Walk by the flamingoes. Peer into the fish tanks. And say hi to some cool reptiles. If there is a ski show, make sure you check that out too!
Learn from helpful staff at the various locations, then stop at any of the gift shops or food shops for a range of souvenirs and expensive refreshments. Check out the basic map online so you can get a feel for how much walking you’ll be doing! Bring in water and small snacks to keep your kiddos (and yourself) happy and hydrated.
Overall, SeaWorld is a fantastic family-friendly attraction! There is entertainment for everyone, plenty for young kids to enjoy, and plenty for older kids and adults. It’s an expensive ticket, so get a season pass if you plan on both parks or more than one day. And keep an eye on the website for various deals. Remember parking is $22 per vehicle, unless you buy a gold pass which includes parking.
This is a perfect experience for your family! We walked away in awe of God’s creation, inspired to take better care of our world, and exhausted from a day of fun.
