School is sneaking up on us way too quickly, so I’m getting my hiney into high gear! The boys are starting school in just under two weeks and I know that the transition for my youngest is going to be a tough one. He is starting Kindergarten and is not used to being away from mom – and even more, he’s used to snacking… ALL DAY.
They go to school several miles from home so we usually have a little ride home where they’re starving. I’m always looking for healthier options that are easier for the car, or to keep in the car (in case I forget!) so they’re able to eat them as needed.
Even better? I got all of these snacks from our local Sam’s Club! I love buying in bulk – although it can be a little more costly up-front, it is cheaper over time when we’re buying things we know we use!
5 After School Snacks That You Can Feel Good About:
- Almonds – We love almonds in our home – They can become costly, and when we buy the large bag of Almonds from Sam’s my husband usually eats the whole bag in 2 days – so I splurge a little bit extra and get the individual bags and they last us 1-2 weeks (we eat a LOT of almonds)
- Lärabar – These are found in the protein-bar section of Sam’s Club – which is a little strange since they’re not really a protein bar. I just love that there are 6 or less ingredients in their most natural state possible. My kids didn’t instantly take to these because they don’t look like a candy bar.. but they love them now! I never feel guilty about handing one of these to the kids.
- Lärabar Bites – Similar to the Larabar, there are only a few ingredients! The kids were expecting them to taste like a mini-donught at first (since they’re powdered) but they love the special treat-taste.
- Mandarin Oranges– These are a little tough for the car, but I crack them open and drink a bit of the juice myself so they don’t spill. My kids just use their fingers or mouths to eat them. I have a LITTLE more guilt about these since they’re not in their natural state and have added juice, but it’s still better than handing them a bag of chips!
- Chocolate Milk – My kids LOVE Chocolate Milk! Sam’s Club started carrying the Nestle brand of chocolate milk and they love to drink these, warm or cold, they don’t care. I put them in their lunch bags and we take them to-go almost everywhere. Water is obviously better in many ways, but it’s boring! Chocolate milk has vitamins and minerals and tastes great!
There you have it – We love these items that need no refrigeration or special storage. I usually also purchase several refrigerated items like cheese sticks, meat sticks, yogurt tubes/smoothies and fruits/veggies to snack on – but they’re not as easy for on-the-go.
Check out your local Sam’s Club and pick up some of these great items before school starts so you’re prepared for a great year!
