I love to enjoy movies at home, but doing it every week can get a little less of a ‘treat’ and a little too normal and not special. My kids practically think that every night is Family Movie Night. So we’ve decided to mix it up a bit – just to get the special feeling back!
Tips for Family Movie Night
The boys have been desperately wanting to see The Angry Birds Movie so when I heard that VUDU had it available for purchase, I started planning a fun movie night that doesn’t feel like every other movie night!
- Make a special announcement: I made this fun sign with a giant white board and markers. I’m not a great artist, but I followed some pictures and did my best – the kids were impressed. They were super excited and kept asking how much longer until 7:30
- Tickets: There are so many ways I can think of ticket use –
- My kids decided that they were going to play ‘ticket-window’ and passed tickets to all of us to hand in to them to get our spot in the living room.
- You could pass out tickets for good behavior during the week or for chores done – and let them cash them in for treats, popcorn, and beverages for the movie night.
- Having the kids invite their neighborhood friends by giving them a special ticket to come to the ‘showing’.
- Picnic Style: I almost never let the kids eat in the living room – but when we do, we lay out blankets across the floor and they can eat on the blanket. Picnics are magical!
- Snack boxes: We used some containers I had bought from the dollar store and packed them with popcorn, a drink and M&M’s. The kids loved that they didn’t have to share anything from their own special box.
- Ambiance! Usually we’re not setting the mood in our living room for a movie – but for this special family movie night we drew the curtains closed, turned the lights off and set up the surround sound so we had the full movie effects. We also removed other distractions like phones, computers and ipads.
So taking a little extra time and effort can make the huge difference between just-another-movie-night and a Fun Family Movie Night.
