Cleaning Bath Tub Squirt Toys
My children love their bath tub squirt toys. The squirt them, chew them, suck on them, throw them, swim them, and make up little games and stories with them. Then one day I squeezed some black gunk out of one. And started noticing little darknesses on others, like there was more black gunk inside. So, of course, I googled it. Over time, the icky bath water (“butt water” in our house) leaves gunk inside the squirt toys which can mold or cause gross build up. I don’t want my kids sucking on or playing in that! I highly doubt it would really hurt them, but it might make them nauseous or even a little sick, or cause a rash.
How to Clean Squirt Toys: Bleach Soaking
So I googled how to clean it, and the best option was what I expected: a bleach/water mixture. Suck the bleach solution up into the squirt toy, shake and soak. Then rinse. And rinse and rinse and rinse, then allow them to air dry. This might not get all the mold and gunk, so keep a close eye.
How to Clean Squirt Toys: Toss Them!
For squirt toys that are worth about $1 a piece or less, that seems like way too much work. My solution? Toss them and buy more! Recommendations seem to be that a squirt toy is good for about 6 months of use. We definitely used ours longer before I noticed anything, so use your best judgment. Prevent Squirt Toy Mold
To prevent the inside of squirt toys from getting icky, you have to prevent the water from getting in. A spot of hot glue over the hole of a new, dry squirt can do the job! Then they aren’t quite as fun because they can’t squirt, but they also can’t get icky and need cleaning/replacing.

My little one loves bath time! He could play in the tub for hours. I regularly soak the bath toys in bleach, but I’ve never tried opening the toys to see if the mold was all gone.
They definitely need to be tossed! I fill them with bleach water occasionally to soak. It seems to help make them last a lil longer.
I like all the shimmers, except for Cheers 🙁 It looked great in the bottle tho, but on my nails it would look like a nightmare ebcause I have horrible ridges. I'm not a creme person so not excited about the cremes.

This happened to me with my 1st child. He has train bath toys and one day I noticed this black stuff in the tub. I realized it was mold from the toy – I just threw them out. Didn’t want to take any chances.

Your picture of when you open the toys is so true. Often if you have a rubber duck and you look at the bottom of it, you will see the mold growing inside of it. We had bought my daughter a bathtime ll that was made for the tub. Even though we dried it after each bath and sat it out of the tub to dry out well, all of a sudden we could see it growing under the face of the doll.
Yikes. I don’t even think I want to see what my daughter’s toys look like. I clean them but there’s always a bit of water that just. Won’t. Come. Out.
We usually use bath colors and crayons to enjoy our bathtimes.
I usually clean ours with a bleach solution, but I love the idea of using the hot glue to close up the opening! Great tip to prevent the yuck!

When I start the tub for my kids, I add the bubbles and let the jets foam them up for about a minute. They love getting in the suds and pretend it’s snow.

If they are newer then clean with bleach if it is really bad then throw them out
