Happy 4th of July!
I hope you get to celebrate today. To spend time with family or friends, to see fireworks or eat hot dogs, or even just to sit down and think for a minute about freedom. Because today we celebrate having freedom! Freedom to believe whatever religion we want to believe (or no religion at all if that’s your choice). Freedom to choose what schooling or career we want, freedom to choose how many kids we want to have, freedom to say whatever is on our minds. Freedom from the ever-present danger that exists in other countries: danger that the government might actually come and imprison or kill you or your family based on your beliefs or your words. Yes, we face bullying and sometimes freedom means we choose the wrong choice (we all do at one time or another!), but we are free!
So today let’s celebrate the red, white and blue! Today let’s remember the enormous struggle our founders faced to create a country based on personal freedom, and the soldiers that put their lives on the line to protect that freedom. Let’s put away our opinions, tuck away our rainbows and our pictures attacking each other and celebrate the fact that we are allowed to have opinions! That we are allowed to put whatever we want out for the world to see. That this country offers freedom for EVERY people group, not just the biggest, loudest, or richest one. Happy 4th of July!
(And don’t blow your face off with fireworks please!)

My daughter is old enough this year to understand it was our country’s birthday. She was so excited about the fireworks!
