My little 3 year old is a crafter. He loves being creative, whether it’s with crayons, paint, playdough, or glue and whatever he can find to glue down. He loves sitting at the kitchen table and working on art projects, which generally turn out like scribbles and who knows what, but it’s fun for him! I love that he enjoys being creative, and when I received Aquabeads in the mail, he was instantly at my side wanting to put them together!
Aquabeads from International Playthings
Aquabeads are little bitty balls that stick together when exposed to water. Remember those little beads that you would make into shapes and then iron? Aquabeads are very similar, minus that dangerous iron! The little balls can be shaped into whatever you want on their little square platform, then sprayed with water and allowed to dry together. The kits come with beads, a tray to keep them in, a little bead grabber, a little spray bottle, and a couple sheets with designs.
Aquabeads: Parts and Pieces
I love the design sheets because they allow people with less creativity (like me) to create fun designs without having to imagine them first. They also allow more complicated designs, like making Anna or Elsa in the Frozen kit! The design sheets can also slide into holders behind the bead platform so it won’t move. I also love the little bead grabber for placing beads one at a time. The bead grabber saves my fingers from becoming quickly exhausted. As far as I can tell, the kits come with a few extra beads, so the couple that hit the floor and roll away aren’t a lost cause. The little spray bottles are simple to operate. And the bead platform can be set in a slot to sit upright and drain off extra water while it dries. Then the bead container can be snapped into it’s lid for storage!
Aquabeads: Quality
The Aquabeads stick together much better than I thought they would! After fully dry, you can spray the backside and re-dry, or squish them under a big book to help them bond more thoroughly. I encourage my 3 year old to be gentle when he plays with them (he’s a boy so who am I kidding!) and he hasn’t broken any yet!
Aquabeads: Age
Aquabeads are a really fun activity! They are definitely way too complicated for my 3 year old, but would be a great activity for an elementary school age child! The box say 4+, it might be a bit complicated depending on the 4 year old and the kit. Big designs are harder, where small designs take less time and focus. It would make a fun party activity! Or a good quiet-time while mom does the dishes activity!
Aquabeads: Cons
There doesn’t seem to be a red aquabead. The beads for the apple are kind of a reddish-orange that doesn’t seem quite right. Other than that, the only bad thing is that the spray bottle doesn’t fit inside the kit when it’s all snapped together for storage. I also wish it came with an extra platform so a person could make a second design while the first dries.
